If you follow us on social media, you know that we love the work of Rumi. We even created a day called “Rumi Tuesday” to share his wisdom with our supporters. Rumi Tuesday is one of my favourite days of the week!

We don’t, however, have a chance to share longer pieces of his work, and I felt that this forum, the blog/the podcast, is better suited to that.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.

meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

Jellaludin Rumi (Translated by Coleman Barks: The Essential Rumi)

Life is full of ups and downs, and we tend to be sold a core belief that the downs are somehow bad and that we shouldn’t experience them at all.

Ignore them and try to be positive.

But we all know that doesn’t work in the long run.

This poem will invoke different meanings and interpretations from each person that reads it, and today, I’d like to share what it means to me.

When I read it, I’m reminded to release resistance to what I think should be and acceptwhat is.

Rumi’s words move me from expectations into reality.

When I’m experiencing reality, I am present. I am learning; I am growing; I am expanding my body, mind and spirit. When I sit in reality, I can see. I can see my blessings, and I can see my dreams. I can see what I want more of, and what I don’t want at all.

Book

The Guest House reminds us that reality is ever-changing, and we cannot stop it by trying to resist it. It makes me think of the Zen Proverb, “let go or be dragged.”

Let go of your idea of what should be and honour what is. Even if ‘what is‘ is terrifying.

You’ve survived everything to this point in your life, so why not hold steadfast to the belief that you will also survive your current circumstances?

Being dragged is painful. I’ve been there, and I know you have too. Where you’ve resisted the truth of what’s happening in your life. Where you’ve tried to bury your head in the sand because youdon’t want to see or feel the pain anymore.

No, I urge you. Walk through your pain. You’ll feel the heat from the fire, and you may even be burned, but you will be through it. Your scars will remind you of your strength and your courage. You will have seen all there is to see, learned all you need to know.

I find the older I get, the more I recognize that walking through my pain may be tough, but it’s usually the shorter path because whatever DivineLesson I’m supposed to learn will remain if I don’t face it.

I know that if I don’t allow this guest, that it’ll just come back to me again – in another form, perhaps, but it will come back. I cannot resist the reality of its lesson because, as Rumi says, it was designed by a ‘guide from beyond.’

The Guest House also reminds me that we are all vulnerable. We are all experiencing emotional and soul growth in our unique way.

This line stands out to me: “He may be clearing you out for some new delight.” This is the guest that makes you shed your ego and your attachments. This is the guest that tests what you’re made of. This guest either weaken or strengthen your Faith. It all depends on how you approach it.

We often assume hardship is bad for us. That its unnatural and we shouldn’t have to face it. Because we cling to this false belief, we can miss the hiddentreasures God/The Universe has planted in that pain that is meant for our ultimate gain.

I can reflect on my life and find countless examples if XYZ had gone my way (at the time) how I would have missed out on something I think is far more valuable to me today.

I think this poem reminds me most to trust Divine Guidance. It reminds me that my human self doesn’t always see the big plan for my life. I only see a glimpse of it as it unfolds before me. I don’t see the matrix behind all the energies that run within us and around us.

As we head into our season break, I hope you’ll take time to honour each guest that comes into your house.

And ask it, “what are you here to teach me?” and you may be surprised by what you feel/hear/sense.

I’ll be back here in the fall with new posts/podcasts, but until then, I hope you’ll take some time to read some of our past work.
